How did you first get into surfing? What about the sport hooked you and made you want to pursue it?
My dad said yes to a job in North Sydney and while there for two years the sport kinda sneaked up on me. Once we moved back to Sweden I was already hooked.
If you had to describe your personal surfing style in just a few words, what would it be? What aspects of your approach set you apart?
I guess I’d describe my style as function orientated. Maybe because I simply can’t do the handstands, ollies, or helicopters haha. What I like most are steep deep noserides and rail turns so thats mostly what I try to do.
Also I am tall and skinny with my hands out a lot so I guess you also say like a pelican.
What does it mean to you to represent JBay Fin Design?
A heart-full family brand with unwavering dedication to style(/art), functionality and quality. That’s just a recipie for good life and good surfing right there and it is my greatest honor and inspiration to be part of that family.
What does the JBay Fin Design’s motto "Not just a fin, it's a feeling" mean to you?
Well, its not an accessory like leash or deck pad. A fin is what you surf. Different fins have different feeling to them, especially good fins, just like the surfboards. And thats why we surf, because of how it feels.
Which fins do you ride and how do the fins you ride shape your overall experience in the water? Also, include which dimension surfboards you pair the fins with.
I ride the 10.5″ DIE SEEKAT with my 9’10 and previous 9’8. It has the area of a pivot style fin but with some rake so it feels good even when you put it on rail. When it is too small to do any rail turning action I like the 10.5″ Magna V2, the less rake make its pivots slightly snappier. My 10.5″ Supers V2 is for when its as good as it gets here.
Describe your earliest memories of riding your first surfboard. What was that experience like for you?
The first real wave I caught I was on a boogie board. My family had just moved to Oz and we were having a picknick on the beach with some friends. I borrowed the boogie board and swam out the back. I’ve always been in the water a lot so the flushings on the way out just seemed fun to me. Once out I had no idea what to do but I just copied the other guys and eventually pulled the plug on one. Barely caught it and didnt know any better than to just go straight but it sure was a blast and it kept me hooked to where I am now.
What are some of your favourite waves and surf spots around the world? Do you have a "home break" that holds a special place for you?
I just love the local beach here in Norway. You never know what it will throw at ya and usually not as crowded as the points. Other than that Point at Jbay, this one beach in the south of France, and another lil point in El Salvador are what I dream of most the time.
What's the most memorable or meaningful surf experience so far?
Had a empty session with my now girlfriend that has to be top of the list at the moment. Waves where clean with just enough for a good perch and then an end section. Being just the two of us and how it turned out it was really something.
Outside of surfing, what are some of your other passions and hobbies?
Love some outdoor stuff, designing my own boards and stirring up a good time.
If you had to choose one, what would be your single greatest accomplishment or proudest moment as a surfer?
I guess comp results should come here but really the fact that I brought to life the Scandanavian Surf Fest competition (that Ludi was part of one time) and after multiple time/years it has really built a longboard community in my region that I am really proud of.
If you could have any celebrity caddy for you during a big contest, who would you choose and why?
Ludi cause he would not lose that board. Ludi du Toit..also knows as DIE SEEKAT(The Octopus)
Do you have any embarrassing pump-up music guilty pleasures to get hyped before paddling out?
Currently love country drum and base. Only know two songs but they really do the trick: Better than gold by Justin Hawkes fex. Butost days its a lot of this norwegian band called Evig Ferie.
What's the most "bro brah" lingo term you've picked up from fellow surfers that you can't get out of your vocabulary?
Me and my mates usually say Gråvt which translates to rough but we say it in a positive way like surfer say hectic or gnarly.
Time for a little personal myth-busting - what's one misconception about your personality that you'd like to clear up?
Some people think I am 50 years old. Probably cause the beard I rock occasionally haha. But I am 28 so far and not part of the OGs just yet.
What's one rule in surfing's unwritten rulebook that you think desperately needs an update or change?
Just reckon it needs to be written and details discussed rigorously. Nowadays in Norway it is easy to just take everyone’s wave cause no one here has the voice to tell you off or just start the discussion. Communication is key and we need to start it.
There's an ongoing debate around whether leashes should be allowed in traditional longboard contests to preserve the roots of the sport. What's your take - should leashes be banned or is it an outdated tradition holding things back?
Optional man. Its harder logging with a leash but there is much less risk.
