How did you first get into surfing? What about the sport hooked you and made you want to pursue it?
A bunch of my friends and I started at the same time, and it was just such a great experience having that shared journey. Seeing the progression among all of us was pretty cool.
If you had to describe your personal surfing style in just a few words, what would it be? What aspects of your approach set you apart?
I’d say I’m a loose canon when it comes to my style. You never know which day I’m going to have a stylish day or just be plain stiff.
What does it mean to you to represent JBay Fin Design?
This brand holds a special place in my heart. They were the first to see something in me as a surfer and reach out. That initial recognition was priceless – a feeling you can’t replicate. To have my passion and skills acknowledged by the industry meant everything. It’s a moment I’ll always cherish.
What does the JBay Fin Design’s motto "Not just a fin, it's a feeling" mean to you?
Surfing is all about feeling…just about the board and fins. The essence of surfing is found in those moments out on the ocean, connecting with the waves and the people around you. That feeling is what makes the sport so unique.
Which fins do you ride and how do the fins you ride shape your overall experience in the water? Also, include which dimension surfboards you pair the fins with.
Albatros 9.5″ – This board is my go-to favorite. It instills me with the confidence to nail those critical nose rides, while still keeping things loose and flowy through turns. An all-around winner.
Supers V2 10″ – A recent addition to my quiver that quickly became a top pick. The wide base smooths out those steep, intimidating sections. Plus, it allows for drawn-out, flowing turns that just feel incredibly dialed.
These are paired as follow:
9’6 Des Saywer – Albatross
9’6 Steven Saywer Brazil Model – Supers V2
Let's settle an age-old surf debate: Is shortboarding or longboarding the cooler discipline? Make your case for why your craft reigns supreme.
In my experience, longboarding is the superior surf discipline. Now, I may be biased, but I’ve witnessed firsthand how it positively transforms people’s entire mindset in the water. Longboarders are all about soaking up the vibe – kicking back, catching waves, and having an all-around good time. No territorial clashes, no egos, just a laidback shared stoke.
It’s a stark contrast to shortboarding’s overly competitive nature that nearly made me resent surfing altogether as a grom. With longboarding, the focus shifts to joy, calmness, and escaping the hectic grind. That peaceful energy is what hooked me and so many others. Longboarding isn’t just riding a bigger board – it’s an attitude, a lifestyle even. And in my books, that easygoing spirit is what surfing should really be about.
Some view the pro tour as becoming too corporate and filtered, missing that rebellious edge. As a team rider, how do you balance representing brands while staying true to surfing's anti-establishment foundations?
Honestly. You shouldn’t be sponsored by a brand that doesn’t fit with your personality or style of surfing. That way you can be yourself on tour/at competitions without having to worry about the politics behind it all.
What's your most prized surfing possession or memento, and what's the story behind it?
My most prized surfing possession is a Ben Hynson shaped 5’6 orange quad fin that I got as a gift from one of the guest houses at Supers.
Which breaks are still on your surfing bucket list to check off?
Noosa in Australia is still a wave I’m so keen to surf as well as one of the long breaks in Morocco (not sure of the name).
