How did you first get into surfing? What about the sport hooked you and made you want to pursue it?
I saw the original “Gidget” movie with Sandra Dee, turned to my aunt who had taken me, and announced very loudly, “I’m gonna b a surfer girl” too. The rest is history!
If you had to describe your personal surfing style in just a few words, what would it be? What aspects of your approach set you apart?
“Soul surfer”. It’s never been about the biggest wave, the competition, the I’ve gotta get better attitude. It’s always been a solitary journey that’s all mine!!! It’s just me, the ocean, & the fun!
What does it mean to you to represent JBay Fin Design?
It’s just COOL to have an awesome company like JBAY FIN DESIGN send me a package all the way from South Africa with what I thought was just another box of cool stuff! I have to confess I don’t know nuthin about fins & always figured one is as good as another. WOW WAS I EDUCATED! My FIN is really ME. I feel cool with it on my longboard, I feel like my rides move quicker, and it’s uniquely designed for ME! Now that’s bad ass cool right?
What does the JBay Fin Design’s motto "Not just a fin, it's a feeling" mean to you?
It’s an absolute true statement cuz SURFING IS A FEELING like no other. It’s like if u know u know.
Which fins do you ride and how do the fins you ride shape your overall experience in the water? Also, include which dimension surfboards you pair the fins with.
I have a 9.5” Salty and 10” Point single fins in OLD SKOOL RED that I pair with my 2 epoxy longboards both a 9’6”. The 10” Point goes on my “slower” to turn board & the 9.5” Salty on my lighter quicker model. I LOVE THEM BOTH!!!!
Describe your earliest memories of riding your first surfboard. What was that experience like for you?
I remember my 1st sesh like it was yesterday. Mom dropped me off at the beach ( I was too young to drive ) by myself. I had my sack lunch, beach towel, & my Yater 9’10” new longboard Dad bought me. Had on a one piece swim suit. Ha! No leash or wetsuit cuz they didn’t make them yet! I had waxed it up pretty good so I just took it out. I did get a few waves & stood up but fell immediately. I knew then I WAS A COOL SOCAL SURFGIRL & pretty fierce too! I WAS HOOKED.
What are some of your favourite waves and surf spots around the world? Do you have a "home break" that holds a special place for you?
My last wave is always my best. In high school we drove all over California and surfed “all the spots”. I now only surf my home break, I don’t have the desire to go figure out any other place. I’m comfortable and when you’re old that matters.
What's the most memorable or meaningful surf experience so far?
Surfing with my son is always my most memorable seshes. Of course surfing with the hubs is a must!!!! He’s also my board caddy! Yewwwww!
Outside of surfing, what are some of your other passions and hobbies?
WORKING OUT! I spent over 30 years in the fitness industry & it’s a lifestyle. Injured, tired, etc I MAKE THE TIME! I also love disc golf. I don’t play but I love the hiking & keeping score.
How do you like spending time when you're not in the water?
EXERCISING. Hangin with the boys on the disc golf course. Being with the grands ( Squids 1,2,&3). Reading & Studying my BIBLE (KJV ) and watching all the watchman on the walls videos. THE BEST!!!
What's the craziest, funniest, or most unexpected thing that's happened to you during surfing so far?
Oh gosh so many but nowadays I always laugh when other surfers give me a glance & think she ain’t no threat! Ha!
What's the craziest, funniest, or most unexpected thing that's happened to you during surfing so far?
THAT I AM STILL DOING IT!
Who's the best surfer out there right now in your opinion? Describe their signature moves.
MY HUSBAND!!!! He catches waves so easily which looks like he’s barely paddling. Takes off on the peak. He races to the nose. He has to this day the BEST FLY AWAY I’ve ever seen! He paddles out like in slow motion but gets out so fast. It’s a trip to watch!
Do you have any embarrassing pump-up music guilty pleasures to get hyped before paddling out?
I loveeee HEAVY METAL which always pumps me up but I really listen after I’ve surfed thinking about all the fun I had! Think 80’s / 90’s bands. Before going out I’m too busy praying, not kidding! Thank u Jesus!
What's the most "bro brah" lingo term you've picked up from fellow surfers that you can't get out of your vocabulary?
